Literature Text

It had been many more decades after Hiccup's fight with the Green Death. Both he and Toothless were now older and more experienced. They now lead the dragon training instead of Gobber.

The Training system has since then been redesigned, what with Vikings now cooperating with the dragons instead of fighting them. The new training started when the village's young ones were ten. They were lead up to the old training area (the chain "ceiling" once covering it has since been removed) and show many covered boxes. They got to go up and pick one out, without knowing what was inside. They later got to go home and open their boxes. Inside the boxes was the dragon they're supposed to train. The dragons picked for this selection are usually only a few months old, very impressionable and idyllic for training. The most common dragons trained are Gronckles and Nadders. The lesser common dragons are Monstrous Nightmares and Zipplebacks. Terrible Terrors are more commonly used for hunting mice and rabbits that invade the Viking home, like a house cat. However, there's ONE dragon that hardly EVER appears in dragon training, The Night Fury. Night Furies are extremely rare and you can only find one once in a couple of decades of Vikings. However they DO appear every now and then.

Hiccup's redesigned Training curriculum DID include traditional Viking skills like sword fighting, axe throwing and the like, but they didn't perform such drills on dragons. They also had blacksmithing lessons, as Hiccup had found it very useful himself.

This year's new recruits consisted of eleven young Vikings, ready to become warriors. There was Hurtlingspear, the biggest, ugliest and toughest of the recruits, no doubt he'd do well. Welt was also in the line up. He had large arms and small legs, an awkward combination to be sure, but I warn you not to make him angry when he has a hammer. Haddockhead had a face like a haddock, and smelt like one that's been dead for a month. Wool has hair as white as anything, and no one knows why, he just does, and it sticks straight up off of his narrow and pointed head. Weasel has narrow suspicious eyes that make him look like he's done something bad, even if he hasn't. He's also as quick as a flash, with a lean build too. Crabears has bright red ears and a pale face, he's also heavier than the others, making him look like a fat crab. Ratstail is a small lad, one with an overbite and an odd habit of biting his fingers when he's nervous. Stomper has large feet and hands, as well as a large head. He's not very smart and isn't the best at hunting either, his tromping feet can be heard a mile off. Blueblood is the son of the "wealthiest" family on Berk. He already had a small Gronckle of his own, one he named Octofish. Blister is short and big at the same time. He was short height wise, but big middle wise. He had the makings of arm and leg hair already, and, from the sound of his voice, was already hitting puberty. Last but not least, and the only girl in the whole training program, was Bracken. Bracken was small, quiet and not very good at lifting heavy things. She couldn't swing an Axe, lift a hammer or even a short sword. She was obviously the weakest of them all.

It was the middle of summer on Berk, so it was a humid and soggy day. The new recruits stood in the training arena, waiting for Hiccup to allow them to grab their dragons. The boxes now in front of them were about two feet long and three feet tall. Some boxes were shaking violently, others were as still as stone. There were a grand total of twelve boxes lined up. Hiccup always added one extra box incase of a squabble over a certain box.

"Now then," Said Hiccup, pacing in front of the boxes. "inside these boxes is the dragon you will be training. It is important for you to pick the one you feel is YOUR dragon. Take your time choosing, this isn't a rush. After picking your dragon, you will have two week's time to get to know it. After that you are under my tutelage." Hiccup paused, staring at the recruits to make sure they were listening. Most were, others were staring off blankly, and Bracken seemed to be looking around for something. "Bracken, what are you looking for?" Hiccup asked.

"I'm looking for Toothless sir!" She said. "I want to see Toothless too!" She said with an excited glint in her eyes. Hiccup smiled.

"I'm sorry, but today is Toothless' day off. I promise he'll be here for other sessions though, don't worry."

"Oh, I see." Said Bracken obviously disappointed.

"Hey hey hey! Cut the chatter! Let's get our OWN dragons!" Said Hurtlingspear, in an obvious rush.

"Alright, alright, hold your horses." Said Hiccup. "Now then, go pick your dragon." Hiccup had finally given the signal to get their dragons and the boys raced off to the box they had been eyeing while Hiccup had been talking. In a matter of seconds the boys had their dragons and Bracken was the only one without one. She had a choice between two boxes. The one on her right was thrashing wildly about in it's box, hissing and spitting. The other one was absolutely silent. Since the box on the left seemed to be a more promising option for training, Bracken tried to lift the box. I say tried, because she couldn't quite lift it off the ground, but eventually managed to get the box off the ground. As she trudged back to her spot her legs trembled with the effort of keeping to box up.

"Now that you've got your dragons, you are dismissed." Said Hiccup. All the other boys left in an excited hurry, but Bracken stayed behind.

"Um, sir? Do you mind if I try opening the box here sir?" She asked, knees trembling.

"That's fine by me. Do you want some help?" Hiccup offered.

"No thank you, I think I've got it." She said as she set her box down with a huff.

"Alright then, I'll leave you to your business then." Hiccup waved and walked off, his prosthetic limb squeaking slightly so. Bracken sighed and looked down at her box. The dragon seemed to be slightly awake now, and the box clattered somewhat on the stone floor.

"Alright, I can do this." Said bracken as she pried off the lid to the box. She had been slightly expecting the dragon to burst out of the box and attack her, but nothing happened. Curious, she peered over into the dark box. Inside was… nothing. That couldn't be right, she thought as she stuck her hand into the dark box. She felt her hand touch something scaly, it grunted and nibbled curiously at her hand. Surprised, she yanked back her hand and the box fell over, causing the young dragon inside to tumble out. It squeaked indignantly at being turned over and shook it's head. Bracken gasped, could it be? It couldn't, thought Bracken. There's no way I own the only Night Fury that's appeared in the last THREE DECADES.
